New project brochure available

November 2007

  • We regret to announce that Professor Bruce Sellwood died on 2 November 2007after a long illness.

  • The following team paper has been accepted for publication by World Archaeology
    Mithen, S. J. Jenkins, E., Jamjoum. K., Nuimat. S, Nortcliff. S., & Finlayson, B. Experimental Crop Growing in Jordan to Develop A Methodology for the Identification of Ancient Crop Irrigation.

October 2007

  • A final phase of fieldwork is currently being undertaken by Gemma Carr and will be ongoing until the
    end of January 2008. Extensive interviews with organisations and farmers from a number of agricultural areas are being conducted to address the key research question of how water reuse should be managed for the future.

September 2007

  • Congratulations to Sophie and Sam (Smith) on the birth of thier son Charlie!

June 2007

  • Many of the team have been away on Field visits during April, May and June returning home with plenty of samples and data to analyse.

  • Welcome back to Jaimie Lovell who arrived on 26th April and will be working in Geoscience until 19th July.

  • A team paper examining the effects of climate change on the Bronze Age Site of Jawa has been accepted for publication by The Journal of Archaeological Science. (See Publications lists for details)

January 2007

  • The second annual report has now been published (Download it)

  • The WLC annual meeting was held on 22nd January. The presentations will soon be available on the website

  • Welcome to David Brayshaw, who has joined the climate modellers and Khadija Darmame, who has joined the Development studies project this month

October 2006

  • Charles Williams joined the Climate Modelling Team in October and will be working with Emily and Bruce.

  • Carol Palmer gave a very interesting Seminar on Villagers and bedouin in the southern Levant: water and traditional rural life.

May 2006

  • On 15th May, Professor Tony Allan visited us and gave a very interesting seminar entitled Water security and urban civilisations in water scarce regions: water, food and trade. WLC partners can download the powerpoint

April 2006

  • Welcome to Jamie Lovell from CBRL, who has joined the School of Human and Environmental Sciences as a visiting fellow!

February 2006

  • On 1st February WLC had a Roman afternoon. Zena Kamash from University of Oxford gave a seminar entitled Water Supply and the economy: evidence from Roman and late Roman Syria and Stuart Black introduced the palaeoenvironmental analysis of Roman sites in Jordan that he has been doing over the last year.
